The Campus Dispatcher will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of the SFU Burnaby campus. This individual is responsible for receiving and responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, providing timely and accurate information to ensure a quick and efficient response. In high-pressure situations, the Campus Dispatcher must remain calm, composed, and focused while dispatching campus security, medical, or emergency teams to incidents, ranging from medical emergencies to safety concerns.

Responsibilities for a Campus Dispatcher
- Respond and provide direction to incoming telephone calls which may include emergency calls for medical, fire, police and other emergent matters

Operate computer software and equipment to quickly and accurately complete tasks under time constraints and pressure

Obtain critical details from callers such as location, nature of the emergency, and any other relevant information accurately and efficiently to dispatch appropriate responders such as campus security, police, medical or fire

Stay composed and focused during high-pressure situations, providing clear, concise communication to both callers and responders.

Address non-emergency calls and provide information or direct callers to the appropriate resources as needed.

Adhere to established protocols, policies, and procedures for handling emergency calls, ensuring compliance with legal and safety regulations.

Prepare reports on the calls and incidents handled, documenting key actions and outcomes for record-keeping purposes.

Serve as a resource for students, faculty, staff, and visitors by providing directions, answering questions, and offering general assistance.
Qualifications for a Campus Dispatcher
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Strong judgment and critical thinking abilities to prioritize emergency situations and dispatch appropriate resources.

Proficiency in typing and entering data accurately with typing speed of 45-50 words per minute (mandatory typing test)

Understanding of emergency response protocols, including how to provide guidance (e.g., first aid, CPR) to callers until responders arrive.

Capacity to manage emotionally charged calls, providing empathy and reassurance to distressed individuals.

Ability to handle multiple phone lines, dispatch systems, and tasks simultaneously while maintaining focus.

Ability to work closely with other dispatchers, emergency responders, and law enforcement to coordinate effective responses.

Familiarity with the SFU Burnaby Campus and local area, including streets, landmarks, and neighborhoods, to provide accurate location information during emergency calls.

Valid Occupational First Aid

Valid BC Security License
