What does a Campus Public Safety Officer do?  

  • Demonstrate and uphold the values of Simon Fraser University’s Campus Public Safety department: Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence. 

  • Provide a welcoming approach as an open and inclusive campus to students, faculty, staff, and non-community members. 

  • Frequent sitting, standing and walking, which may be required for long periods of time, and may involve climbing stairs and walking up inclines and on uneven terrain. 

  • Conduct interior and exterior patrols in various weather inclement 

  • Conduct mobile patrols or mobile response to emergencies. 

  • Patrol Assigned Areas: Conduct regular patrols of the premises to monitor for suspicious activities or potential security breaches. 

  • Access Control: Verify the identity of individuals entering the premises and ensure they have proper authorization. 

  • Respond to Emergencies: Act promptly in case of emergencies (e.g., fire, medical, or security incidents). 

  • Report Incidents: Document and report security incidents, disturbances, and hazards to management. 

  • Maintain a Visible Presence: Remain visible at assigned posts and while patrolling to deter criminal activity and reassure employees, visitors, or residents. 

  • Check Security Systems: Ensure that alarms, locks, and other security systems are functioning properly. 

  • Provide Customer Service: Offer assistance to visitors, residents and employees, such as directions or answering questions, in a professional manner. 

  • Conduct Inspections: Inspect property for safety hazards, damage, or suspicious packages. 

  • Enforce Rules and Regulations: Ensure that visitors, residents and employees adhere to company policies and safety regulations. 

  • Prevent Theft: Monitor activities to prevent theft, vandalism, or unauthorized access to restricted areas. 

  • First Aid and CPR: Administer first aid and CPR when required, until emergency medical professionals arrive. 

  • Document Shift Activities: Keep detailed logs of daily activities, incidents, and any unusual occurrences using reporting systems and Security notebooks. 

  • Secure Entry Points: Lock and unlock doors or gates as necessary, and ensure the premises are secure after hours. 

 

Qualifications to become a Campus Public Safety Officer: 

  • Legal authorization to work in Canada 

  • A valid BC Drivers License Class 5

  • A valid Occupational First Aid Level 2 (OFA2) 

  • Incident Command System Level 100 (ICS 100) – an asset 

  • Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) – an asset
