Duty Manager

Reporting to the General Manager, Operations or the Assistant General Manager, Operations (where applicable), the Duty Manager plans, directs, and coordinates the local base security screening operations. The Duty Manager is responsible for ensuring and improving the performance, productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness of various teams.  Additional focus on workforce planning and profitability to ensure the full utilization of resources while maintaining enhanced compliance standards. Within this role, they must remain in tune with industry standards and play a pivotal role in the client relationship and direct reports development.  

 

Key responsibilities 

  • Responsible for adherence to operational systems, processes, and policies in support of the organization's visions and client requirements.     

  • Collaboratively coordinate and implement a workforce plan with the Resource Optimization Manager (ROM) team to meet daily, weekly, and monthly service and safety requirements within the operational scope.   

  • Involves actively mentoring management and frontline personnel emphasizing development and training processes and standards.   

  • As the primary contact, communicate job site conditions and concerns to key stakeholders. Aiming to enhance overall operational effectiveness by leading solutions.   

  • Monitor that screening operations follow the aviation industry protocols, client requirements, legislation, or division specific. Lead/implement remedial or training actions to ensure ongoing compliance.   

  • Supervise screening operations, making final decisions to enhance efficiency and productivity. Can be the final decision maker in the outcome and further actions to be taken, to enhance operations efficiencies.   

  • Monitor workforce absenteeism and implement contingency plans with administrative support.  

  • Ensure efficient collaboration and coordination between departments through communications with a variety of support services to meet the requirements of the daily operations and client expectations.   

  • Responsible for emergency preparedness and critical response involving any potential security threat. This includes acting as the first responder and leading initial communications, including any reporting.   

  • Conduct regular operational meetings and team briefs to review performance; keeping employees informed.  

  • Support a labour relations strategy aligned with operational requirements and is in support of the company culture and values.   

  • Responsible for managing the data collection and other pertinent information in support of presenting daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly operational effectiveness directly with the client and internal contacts.   

  • Actively follows safety policies and collaborates with the Health and Safety team for compliance.  

  • Manages and increases the effectiveness and efficiency of the supporting departments (Human Resources, Quality, Administration, and Finance) through the coordination and communication between the business functions. 

 

Qualifications  

  • Post Secondary diploma or degree in business management or related field or equivalent work experience.  

  • A minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience as a manager, including overseeing a team   

  • Preference will be given to individuals with experience in the aviation industry.   

  • Established in creating and executing action plans to achieve goals.  

  • Excellent conflict management skills. Has a proven ability to help others through emotional or tense situations, tend to disagreements diplomatically, and collaboratively define solutions that everyone can support.  

  • Experience and track record leading, motivating, and coaching people. Strong commitment to teamwork.  

  • Highly flexible and adaptable to support 24/7 operation.  

  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stressful situations.  

  • Strong understanding of legal requirements and responsibilities in a unionized environment.  

  • Ability to obtain and retain a RAIC (Restricted Area Identity Card) and Transport Canada Clearance

  • Strategic Input - Liaison with top management. Assist in the development of strategic plans for operational activity. Implement and manage operational plans.  

  • Workforce Planning - Monitor performance and implement improvements. Manage employee and team productivity. Provide technical support where necessary.  

  • Communication - Monitor, manage and improve the efficiency of support services such as IT, HR, Accounts and Finance. Facilitate coordination and communication between support function. 

 

Working conditions 

  • Most of the time is spent at the front line of the business (indoors) but may, on occasion, work outside, with frequent opportunities to move about.   

  • Exposed to situations that would be considered stressful, requiring application of stress tolerance.   

  • Physical requirements include but are not limited to - standing; lifting; bending, stooping, kneeling.  

  • Ability to mentally focus and concentrate for prolonged periods.   

  • Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.  

  • Are exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable daily.  

  • Work near others. They often share the same workspace and work with other incumbents holding the same position.   

  • Work on a set schedule can be altered frequently, resulting in schedule changes.  

  • Overtime can be controlled but may be required dependent on operational requirements.
